Difference between Tally.ERP 9 Full Version and Free Version

Many of the TallySchool readers have asked me about the difference between Tally.ERP 9 Full Version and Free Version.

Therefore I am going to write a detailed post about each and every difference between Tally.ERP 9 Full Version and Free Version.

You can download free version of Tally.ERP 9 including GST to learn how Tally works and get yourself educated with Tally.ERP 9.

This is why the free version of Tally.ERP 9 is called as Educational Version. It is because you can get yourself educated for free and be confident before buying the full version.

Let us start with difference between Tally.ERP 9 Full Version and Free Version. I will list them step by step.

Full Version is Paid – Free Version is Free

The major difference is about money. You have to buy the Tally.ERP 9 full version while on the other hand educational version of Tally.ERP 9 is free.

You have to buy the license for Tally.ERP 9 full version. For educational version of Tally.ERP 9, you can just download Tally.ERP 9 and select the option of working in educational version.

You are good to go and you can immediately start using Tally.ERP 9 only with some restrictions.

Whenever you start a free version or educational version of Tally.ERP 9, select the option Work in Educational Mode and you are ready to experience Tally.ERP 9.

For full version of Tally.ERP 9, there are 2 types of licenses. One is Silver and the other is Gold.

Silver version of Tally.ERP 9 is for one single user and Gold version is for multiple users which is generally used by big companies where several accountants are working at the same time.

At the time of writing this post, the price of the Gold Version is ₹54,000 and Silver Version is ₹18,000.

Let’s go to the second most important difference between Tally.ERP 9 Full Version and Free Version.

Entry on only 3 Dates in Tally.ERP 9 Free Version

In Tally.ERP 9 Free Version, you can enter transactions or pass entries on 3 dates only. Let me explain it you.

You can enter the transactions on 1st, 2nd and 31st of the month only, in the Tally.ERP 9 Free Version.

This is one of the biggest and the cleverest limitation set by the developers of Tally.ERP 9.

This means, you will be able to pass almost all the entries but only on a few dates in the entire year. This is awesome for the people who want to learn Tally.ERP 9.

You can try free version of Tally.ERP 9 as much as you like but only on certain dates.

For example, you will not be able to pass an entry on 5th August but you will be able to pass entry on 31st August.

This way, you can experience Tally.ERP 9 to its full capacity and decide whether you want to buy it or not.

This method is much more better than giving free trials of full version for limited period of time. Instead limit the features on certain dates.

In full version of Tally.ERP 9, you can enter the transactions on each and every date because it is a full version. 🙂

Let’s move forward to another major difference between Tally.ERP 9 full version and free version.

Multi Account Printing in Tally.ERP 9 – Not Available in Free Version

This feature is very much useful to print multiple accounts at the same time. This feature is used very frequently by users of Tally and therefore its importance is increased even more.

Many times, readers of TallySchool ask me about printing all the accounts. But that is not possible with the free version of Tally.ERP 9.

This is because that option is simply not available in the free version.

You have to go into each and every ledger and print them one by one. The reason for this is maybe that in free version one would not pass many entries and hence the omission of the feature.

The menu of Multi Account Printing in Tally.ERP 9 looks as in the picture below.

This feature is also useful if you have many employees and you are using Payroll feature in Tally.ERP 9. You can easily print Form 16A or Payslips at one go.

But for this feature, my friend you need to buy the full version of Tally.ERP 9.

No Automatic Bank Reconciliation in Free Version of Tally

Bank Reconciliation is one of the most asked features in Tally.ERP 9. It is natural because this feature saves time.

You can easily import the bank statement in Tally.ERP 9 and let Tally do the rest of the work for you. This is called Automatic Bank Reconciliation in Tally.ERP 9.

The entries that you have entered in your bank ledgers in Tally will get automatically reconciled. The ones that Tally.ERP 9 is not able to reconcile will be reflected separately for you to reconcile.

This can save much of your time which you will find boring to do.

Day by day bank reconciliation is very tedious task and repetitive. This can lead to human errors because the task would be difficult to accomplish if you are not interested in what you do.

Manual Bank Reconciliation is still available in Tally.ERP 9 in which you have to reconcile the entries date by date on your own as shown in the picture below.

Data Synchronization and Remote Access to Tally Data Not Available in Free Version

This feature is not available in Tally.ERP 9 free version because it requires a subscription of Tally.NET through which you can synchronize your data as well as remotely access it.

Imagine you have two different places of conducting business. If you have full version of Tally.ERP 9, you can easily synchronize data between the two places in real time in one Tally.

This means, you do not need to separately do the accounting in different software. Your combined accounting in Tally.ERP 9 can be done at both the places instantly.

If you want to see the sales of a particular day of both the places, you can simply log in to your Tally.ERP 9 and easily see the reports of both the places.

Imagine you have different branches. This will be a great feature for you. But this will not be available in free version of Tally.ERP 9.

Another great feature is Remote Access to your data in Tally.ERP 9. You can simply login from anywhere and you can access your data.

This is important in today’s world where you are every time on the move. You can simply open up your Tally and can access data with the help of the internet.

You can also keep a check on the accountants who pass entries when you are not in the office with the help of remote access to your data in Tally.ERP 9.

At the End…

I have explained each and every difference between Tally.ERP 9 Full Version and Free Version.

I am sure you have understood the core differences between both the versions and you can make a good decision on this basis.

This post will clear all your doubts regarding differences between Tally.ERP 9 full version and free version.

Free version is good for learning and educating yourself. It is also good for deciding whether the software suits your needs or not.

    I have two silver licenses of tally erp9 (4.93 & 5.58 )
one is International version and the other is normal.
I wish to renew the TSS and get full features of both licenses.
    How much it will cost?

  3. Nizam says:

Can I enter the data in educational mode and modify in licence one
I post all the entries in educational mode just skip date for the time being
Later I take the copy of that folder and paste in licence one

In that licence one can I change the dates of which I have made in educational mode.

  4. Shreyas Bachute says:

    Hi Rishit,
Actually am not a tally user, I use different software, but as referred by many of people am planning to switch to tally. Before switching I wanted to learn the basic things of tally GST version, So as suggested, created ledgers of CGST, SGST and IGST. But, while making sales transaction, CGST and SGST are not getting calculated automatically, is it limitation of Educational mode?
Also, wanted to know if someone having Licensed version but who is not using Tally, can i get the license from him? If you could please focus on these things.

    • Rishit Shah says:

      Hi, Shreyas!

CGST and SGST also gets automatically calculated and it is not limited to Tally.
Please check your sales ledgers, stock item ledgers and party ledger. If all of those are correct, CGST and SGST will get calculated automatically.

CGST and SGST needs to be calculated when you are selling intra-state, so if the party is out of your home state, SGST and CGST will not get automatically calculated.

And, if someone is having licenced version, you can take his licence and insert the licence in your Tally. It is totally fine to do that.

  5. Dharmesh says:

Maintain bill wise details does not showing when i choose $ currency. Is this any mistake in entry of restriction in educational mode.

    • Rishit Shah says:

      Hi, Dharmesh!

It shows whatever currency you choose and it has nothing to do with educational version.
May be you should update your Tally and then see if it is working.

If then too it doesn’t work, please send me a screen shot and I will see what the problem is.

  6. Niranjan says:

    Hi Rishit,

I want to use Tally for the simple account maintenance of a school. It is just the creation of balance sheet for auditing by the CA. Is there a simple version of Tally available for small businesses of turnover less than Rs. 3Lakhs?

    • Rishit Shah says:

      Hi, Niranjan!

There are only 2 versions of tally available and with respect to functionalities, they both are almost the same.
There is no simpler version of tally available.
