Recently I got an email from one of the readers of TallySchool named Manoj. He asked a bunch of questions and one of the questions hooked me up.
I thought on the question for a while. I knew the answer and I replied back with answer.
I searched the internet for more details about that question and found out there were not many answers and the answers which were there were not satisfactory enough.
So I decided to write an article on the very topic.
You must have guessed from the title of the article what question actually Manoj had asked. Anyways, if you have not guessed it, here is the question that he asked.
Does Tally 9 and Tally.ERP 9 are one and the same?
Or there is a real difference between Tally 9 and Tally.ERP 9.
The answer is YES. They aren’t same.
If they were same, why Tally Solutions would come out with a new version of software and that too with a name change?
Manoj too, had the same view as mine. But I want to go in a bit of detail and share with you the differences or any new features that were not available in Tally 9 but are available in Tally.ERP 9.
While talking about name change, there is not much change in case of letters. They just added the 3 letters.
ERP – which is the abbreviation of Enterprise Resource Planning.
Well, those three letters make a big difference.
As per Forbes, world wide ERP software market consists of USD $25.4B. I can’t even count exactly that in Rupee terms. 🙂
If we take a look beyond the name change, some new features have been added and some existing were enhanced for the better functioning of Tally.
I will discuss in this article each new feature in Tally that has been introduced by Tally Solutions along with the ones which have been enhanced, in detail.
So keep reading!
New Features in Tally.ERP 9
In today’s world of seamless connectivity and instant communication, it has become very much essential to operate from different places.
A new feature in Tally.ERP 9 is Remote Access. With the help of remote access, you can connect to Tally from anywhere in the world.
This feature is very much viable for companies having multiple branches all over the globe or at least at distant places if not all over the globe.
To connect with Tally from a remote or distant place, you need a valid Tally.NET subscription.
Once you buy the Tally.NET subscription, you have to create user IDs and passwords for the persons who will be accessing Tally remotely.
Once user IDs and passwords will be created, you are ready to go with remote access.
Here are some of the features which you can avail with remote access.
- Branch accounting and management
- Warehouse accounting and management
- Factory accounting and management
- If you are Chartered Accountant, you can perform audit remotely (discussed in detail ahead)
- Use by remotely located staff (somewhat like a branch)
- Useful business information on mobile by key persons of the company on mobile.

Tally.NET is mostly a part of remote access which you just read above.
Tally.NET is an environment that works in the background through which all the internet based functions can be used within a safe and secure environment.
Tally.NET is secured by Tally Solutions itself and even their employees cannot see your data. It just gets transferred over the world wide web from one place to another where you requested.
In short Tally.NET is a protected network through which you can connect Tally at different and distant places for performing functions which are listed above in the Remote Access point.
Simplified Installation Process
Now, this is not something I would care if I were to buy Tally.ERP 9. The reason is because it just a one time process and it will not help me after starting Tally.
Of course, they have made the installation process of Tally simpler than before it is not material to me if I compare it to the whole of operation of Tally after installation.
Apart from simplifying the installation process, a new tool called Tally Admin Tool has been introduced along with the introduction of Tally.ERP 9.
With the help of Tally Admin Tool, you can do the following tasks.
- You can view number of active licensed servers on the LAN (applicable in large offices.)
- Check the site license for all the products from Tally.ERP 9 (like addons)
- Check network connections between a server and a client in a particular network.
- You can convert old file formats such as TCP and TSF to the new Tally.ERP 9 format.
Tally Admin Tool will do the above tasks even without running Tally. You just need the files and nothing more.
New Licensing Mechanism
This is what I call “remain up to date”. Tally Solutions launched a new licensing mechanism which makes it easy for users to handle various licensing issues.
They introduced the concept of an Account for the first time. They should have thought of this before. It is a simple yet an effective solution every company today uses to manage different clients.
With the new licensing mechanism you can centrally configure sites, split accounts or merge accounts and you can view account information by using account user ID and a password.
This is also a new feature that has been introduced along with Tally.ERP 9.
Do you remember earlier I discussed about creating user IDs and passwords in the Remote Access point. Control Centre is the place where you can manage all those users and their security levels.
You can create different types of users such as an Owner and a Standard User. Also you can centrally configure Tally.ERP 9 and apply them at different sites that are connected to that network.
Nothing more in control centre. Moving ahead to Support Centre.
I would rather frame this feature as “After Sales Support” and it is very much vital for any business to survive in this era of cut throat competition.
Although, I believe there is no competition for people who are at the top of their profession or business simply because there is no one there.
With this new feature in Tally.ERP 9 you can directly, from Tally.ERP 9, contact support team of Tally Solutions and resolve any of your queries.
You can also have a log of all the queries previously asked via phone or email. You can also contact your Tally Service Partner for support from whom you purchased Tally.
Enhanced Look & Feel
There is not much of a change here because Tally is already a very robust and good looking software as far as accounting and other functions are concerned.
But one feature they had introduced when they released Tally.ERP 9 was Multiple Selection. This one feature made Tally more user friendly and easy to use.
Have a look at the picture below and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
I’ve selected first and third entries by pressing space bar from the keyboard. Selection makes it easy to have a better look at the particular report or set of entries together.
Multiple selection in Tally.ERP 9 can also be useful if you are scrutinizing entries or just checking entries.
Enhanced Payroll Compliance
Payroll compliance refers to compliance which is necessary by law to make provisions of funds for the employees out of their salaries or payroll.
In India there are several laws related payroll and some of the popular are laws related to employees are employees provident fund, employees state insurance and professional tax.
Although these features were previously present in Tally 9, these features are enhanced with more functionality.
New and enhanced reports and processes have been added to make detailed functioning of payroll in Tally.ERP 9.
Excise for Manufacturers
To those who do not know what is excise, I want to say that excise is a duty levied on manufacturing of goods. Keep that in mind that the definition of excise duty is much more complex than what I’ve written here. It is just for basic understanding.
Now, for those who know the famous Central Excise Act, 1944 and its rules there under, you will get it fast what I am trying to explain.
In Tally.ERP 9, there is a new feature by which you can maintain different central excise records for different central excise units for a single company.
Different methods of valuation under central excise such as Ad Valorem (Value added), Ad Quantum (Quantity added) and MRP based Valuation Method and its expenses can be calculated.
All forms and registers as required by the act can also be created in Tally.ERP 9.
Auditors’ Edition of Tally.ERP 9
Chartered Accountants will be happy to have this feature because this feature is exclusively available to Chartered Accountants.
Tax Audit and Statutory Compliance are special tools that are available in this feature.
With the use of Tally.NET which I’ve explained above (2nd feature), a CA. can do audit and scrutinize the records of his/her client from his own office.
New forms in Tax Audit can also be prepared easily in Tally.ERP 9 including Form 3CD and its different clauses.

Enhanced Tax Deducted at Source
TDS feature was also available but now it is enhanced which will include more than just accounting in Tally. It will also include functional and statutory requirements.
I am not going to write all the features that have been added or enhanced because there is a long list but I must say the new TDS module has a bulk of new features inside.
All the new forms, annexures and new reports that are required by law have been added in Tally.ERP for the ease of TDS compliance.
At The End…
Finally, if you’ve read the whole long article, you will have idea of what are the differences between Tally 9 and Tally.ERP 9.
There are some big differences and some major enhancements. No matter whether there is a difference or an enhancement it has helped in operation of Tally.
The new features at the end will help you and me in running Tally in a more efficient and faster way to complete our tasks easily with much more enjoyment.
Have you used any of the NEW features described above in Tally.ERP 9?
